The town of Kawerau in the Eastern Bay of Plenty is reeling from the news of an armed robbery and then fatal shooting of a man by police near the town yesterday. The 29 year old man, who was a gang member robbed a credit union branch in Kawerau before being pursued by armed police. After stopping, the man opened fired on officers and was killed by return fire. Our reporter Andrew McRae has been in Kawerau.
