All Canterbury police will be wearing sidearms from today. The move was triggered by a shootout between police and a gunman in a suburban street on Tuesday. The gunman is in hospital with serious injuries. Police Minister Stuart Nash is backing the decision but insists it does not mean that routine arming of the police is a step closer. Police Association president Chris Cahill says its a good call.
