In a major shake-up for the European Union ,major centre-left and centre-right parties are set to lose dozens of seats and their combined majority.
Twenty-eight member countries voted for which parties would represent them in the Union which had its highest turnout ever of 51 percent.
Green parties and far-right parties saw surges in their representation, including Nigel Farage's newly-formed Brexit party and Marine Le Pen's far-right party in France which overtook the French President's Party in voter share.
Meanwhile, jostling is under way for the European Commission presidency.
Tim Bale is a professor of politics at Queen Mary University of London and says the changes leaves the European Parliament very fragmented.
