Digital Services tax should follow OECD - tax expert

From Morning Report, 8:27 am on 5 June 2019

A tax expert is warning the government not to rush into taxing large online companies like Facebook, YouTube, Uber and Airbnb.

The government is considering a Digital Services Tax of two to three percent on turnover as one option to ensure offshore digital companies no longer enjoy tax breaks that are not available to local businesses.

These measures would be an interim solution until the OECD reaches an international agreement on how to tax the sector.

But a representative of the country's digital sector Don Christie says the big technology giants should be taxed immediately.

Geof Nightingale is a tax partner at PwC. He tells Corin Dann: "We should stick with an OECD consensus approach, as a small trade-exposed nation that's the safest route."
