The police approved nearly 65,000 firearms licences in 2017 and 2018, while refusing just 359.
A firearm safety specialist who used to work for the police says those numbers make sense, because people who aren't fit to hold a licence, don't usually apply for one.
But gun control advocates say they're worried applications are being processed too quickly. RNZ police reporter Ben Strang has the story.
