The Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage says local councils shouldn't expect her department will come to their rescue if they run into problems with old landfills.
She says while DOC is now running the clean up of the Fox River landfill spill, councils have responsibility for tips, whether current or historic.
Ms Sage told RNZ's political reporter, Jo Moir, the Fox River incident serves as a timely reminder to councils.
