A Northland Iwi leader says the vandalising of cultural statues is disturbing.
Earlier this year a Rangitane carving in Manawatu Gorge reserve had its wooden penis chopped off, while last week in Gisborne a statue of James Cook had the words "Pakeha thief " and "This is our land" scrawled on it.
The former chief executive of the Maori Language Commission and now chairperson for the Far North iwi Te Rarawa is Haami Piripi.
