Dangerous cars trying for WOFs rising - mechanic

A veteran mechanic says the number of dangerous cars being brought to him for warrant of fitness inspections has rocketed.

Official figures show the number of cars failing at their first presentation for a warrant has climbed steadily in the five years since annual checks superseded six-monthly ones for most light vehicles.

Sixty-six-year old Paul Atkin has run Tyre Pro in Hamilton for two decades.

He told Phil Pennington he wants to retire, disillusioned at what he calls a soft approach by the Transport Agency and at motorists who place more importance on saving money than safety.
