Waitangi Tribunal urges repeal of ban on prisoner voting

From Morning Report, 7:40 am on 12 August 2019

The Waitangi Tribunal is telling the government to urgently repeal a law preventing prisoners from voting so they can take part in the next election.

The tribunal has released a scathing report finding the law is significantly prejudicial to Māori, saying they are 11 times more likely to be removed from the electoral roll than non-Māori.

The Justice Minister, Andrew Little, says the Tribunal has made a compelling case. Mani Dunlop reports.
