Boats were overturned, a shipping container was blown on to a car, and other containers toppled into the sea after what's being described as a tornado in downtown Auckland last night.

Police said a container blew off a stack of containers on Jellicoe Wharf, hitting the side of a car and trapping a person inside. The person was freed within 30 minutes by Fire and Emergency and taken to hospital in a moderate condition.

The Great Barrier Island car ferry broke off its mooring line and was adrift just off the Hilton, in danger of smashing into the sea wall. The Coastguard says there was significant damage to Westhaven Marina and Viaduct Harbour.
