Dunedin flood risk: 'People are scared every time it rains'

From Morning Report, 8:50 am on 13 August 2019

More than a hundred Dunedin residents, scientists, engineers and policy makers met last night to discuss the risks of flooding in low-lying suburbs.

In 2015, floodwaters damaged more than 1000 homes and businesses, with sewage contamination forcing some South Dunedin residents to evacuate. And it happened again last year.

With thousands of houses sitting less than 100 centimetres above sea level and an increasing risk of severe weather from climate change, the hui gave residents an opportunity to make their voices heard.
