Mayoral race: 'Aucklanders want honesty'

The head of Auckland's Chamber of Commerce wants the city's mayoral candidates to be more realistic about what they're promising Aucklanders.

Incumbent mayor, Phil Goff, officially launched his campaign over the weekend and told supporters a key focus for his second term would be the environment and climate change.

Mr Goff wants to use barges to get imported cars off Auckland's port, while his rival John Tamihere would create a new 18-lane Auckland harbour crossing.

The chief executive of the city's Chamber of Commerce, Michael Barnett, told reporter Matthew Theunissen that's not what Aucklanders are looking for.

"I think both candidates are trying to show that they are people of vision, and people of vision is not what's going to fix the problems that Auckland has right now," Mr Barnett said.
