Dairy industry faces major disruption from synthetics
The future of the dairy industry is facing major disruption as synthetic producers start to target New Zealand's traditional markets. Until now, labs in Silicon Valley have been focusing on products such as synthetic yoghurt, cheese and ice cream that look and taste like the real thing. But some synthetic dairy makers are now looking to make proteins that will be used as ingredients by big processed food companies -- a market our dairy sector is heavily reliant on.Insight's Teresa Cowie has been asking dairy business insiders about the threat.
