Govt issues formal response to Waitangi Tribunal claim Wai 262
Nearly 30 years after Maori lodged a bid for legal protection for their intellectual and cultural property rights, the Government has finally issued a formal response. Their claim to the Waitangi Tribunal - known as Wai 262 - demanded greater protection and authority over indigenous plant species, traditional knowledge, Maori symbols and designs, and other taonga. It's been called the most complex matter the tribunal's dealt with. The government is proposing to create three new ministerial groups to consider how existing laws and policies might change to achieve this. Te Aniwa Hurihanganui reports.
