Auckland's mayor Phil Goff says the city's port needs to move but a lot of study needs to be done before a decision can be made. .
On Monday the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said it is no longer viable for the car and container port to remain in Auckland's CBD.
A report from a government-commissioned working group has recommended moving operations to Northport near Whangarei.
That's estimated to cost $10 billion and would be New Zealand's most ambitious infrastructure project ever.
