Kiwi sailors stuck overseas arrested after bar brawl

From Morning Report, 7:31 am on 2 July 2020

Three New Zealand sailors who are at the centre of a repatriation mission to the Falkland Islands have been arrested after a bar-brawl on the island.

A Sanford fishing boat spent 25 days getting to The Falklands to pick up the crew from another of their boats.

The crew on the San Aspiring had been fishing for toothfish and doing scientific research off South Georgia since February and were unable to get home due to Covid-19 restrictions.

But the repatriation has been put on hold after three of the fisherman were put in jail.

In The Falklands a charge of violent disorder can carry a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

Royal Falkland Islands Police Inspector, Barry Thacker told our reporter, Sally Murphy, there was a fight at Deano's Bar on 29 June.
