NZ First wants to keep Tiwai Point smelter open

New Zealand First says Tiwai Point's future is a matter of national interest and the plant should be saved.

The plant's owner, Rio Tinto, says it will close the aluminium smelter next year.

Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones is currently in Southland announcing money for flood protection projects.

Jones says the plant's closure has created deep uncertainty for the region New Zealand First will campaign on various options to try keep the smelter open.
