Water reform and farming are yet again the focus of political warfare. New freshwater standards are coming into force next week.
The legislation, only passed earlier this month, puts new controls on farming practices such as winter crop grazing and sets stricter limits on nitrogen pollution.
But the government yesterday announced changes, acknowledging that some of the new regulations were unworkable.
On Tuesday night, the National Party said all the reforms would be "gone by lunchtime" if they are elected to govern. But by last night, that had been walked back to "review and, in some cases, repeal" the new rules.
