Penguins don't come from Antarctica - study

From Morning Report, 8:54 am on 27 August 2020

It turns out penguins don't come from Antarctica as scientists originally thought but started life in the cool coastal regions of New Zealand and Australia about 22 million years ago.

Researchers at the University of California in Berkeley sequenced and analysed the genomes of 18 species of penguins, to chart their movements and diversification over millions of years.

One of the researchers, Rauri Bowie, a professor of integrative biology, says penguins have evolved and adapted to a variety of climates but are struggling to adapt to human-caused climate change.
