Mataura mill fire raises questions about ouvea premix removal

From Morning Report, 8:10 am on 1 September 2020

A fire near a disused paper mill in Mataura has raised further questions about when the hazardous waste stored in the mill will be removed.

About 8500 tonnes of ouvea premix is sitting in the mill in the middle of the Southland township, having been transported there from the Tiwai Point Alumium Smelter six years ago.

Despite repeated pleas for Smelter owners Rio Tinto to take full responsibility for the removal, it has been a slow and frustrating process for Gore District Council mayor Tracy Hicks.

He speaks to Corin Dann.
