A Māori specialist in artificial intelligence says it's only a matter of time before a Māori or Pasifika person is wrongfully arrested because of a false match on facial recognition software.
Police have been working on a $23 million upgrade of their biometrics images system which will be run by the US firm Dataworks Plus.
Multiple studies have found such software is less accurate at matching non-white faces but the police say forensic experts will review all matches to ensure accuracy.
