Next census to collect data on gender, sexuality

From Morning Report, 8:46 am on 2 November 2020

The census will collect information on gender and sexual identity for the first time next time it runs.

The census is the official count of people and where they live in New Zealand, done every five years.

Stats NZ says collecting more data on sex, gender and sexual identity will help decision making for, and about, minority groups.

Jason Attewell is general manager of Social and Population Insights at Stats NZ.
