US Election: What happens if Trump declares victory too soon?

Polling booths across the US will close on Wednesday (NZ time) and officials will begin frantically counting votes for Joe Biden and Donald Trump.

State officials across the country are warning that an election result may be delayed for days while ballots are tallied. This is standard election practice but Trump has condemned it.

He has repeatedly demonized mail-in ballots, decried the inclusion of ballots that are counted after election day and threatened to send his legal team into swing states like Pennsylvania to stop vote counts.

So, what could happen if Trump declares victory prematurely before the votes are finalised?
