The outcome depends on a handful of states - Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Nevada The results may not be known for days as millions of ballots are still to be counted.
But that didn't deter Donald Trump from telling jubilant supporters at the White House last night that as far as he's concerned, he has won the vote.
