Prison officers union pushes back on report spelling out cruel treatment of inmates

The union for prison officers is rejecting a report spelling out cruel treatment of inmates and people being locked in their cells at Auckland Prison for up to 23 hours at a time.

The ombudsman paid a surprise visit to the jail at Paremoremo and identified two breaches of the UN Convention Against Torture and a culture of containment rather than rehabilitation.
