Renters group seeing more tenancies ended early

From Morning Report, 6:16 am on 9 February 2021

A group representing tenants is seeing an increase in the number of renters who are being given 90-day terminations without justification.

New regulations will come in this Thursday, which will stop the practice, as well as grant a range of additional rights for tenants.

The second phase of the Residential Tenancies Act reforms will stop bidding on rental properties, allow tenants to decorate their houses, and also give name suppression if they're successful at the Tenancy Tribunal.

But estate agents are reporting some landlords are looking to sell up, rather than have to deal with the new rules.

The manager at the Tenants Protection Association, Penny Arthur, told RNZ reporter Harry Lock, the changes will bring some positive impacts for renters' rights.
