The New Zealand Principals' Federation president, Perry Rush, is supportive of the implementation of a formalised review process to investigate school exclusions.
His comments come after a 13-year-old boy with autism asked for help from the Children's Commissioner after being excluded from school.
Rush says the government needs to work with the sector to provide resources for children with complex needs so they can stay in mainstream schooling.
Perry Rush spoke to Corin Dann.
