MPs are being asked to back a formal declaration that China's treatment of the Uyghur people is genocide.
The request has come from a group of Uyghur people now living in New Zealand.
It comes hard on the heels of China's ambassador to New Zealand issuing a direct warning against "interfering" in China's "internal matters".
Speaking at the China Business Summit in Auckland yesterday she dismissed talk of forced labour and genocide as: 'lies fabricated by anti-China forces'.
High Court lawyer Sam Vincent is a spokesperson for the New Zealand-based Uyghurs, who he says are too afraid to be identified.
He spoke to Susie Ferguson.
