Celebrated Christchurch poet Tusiata Avia has become the first Pacific woman to win the prize for poetry at the New Zealand Book Awards.
Avia won the Mary and Peter Biggs Award for Poetry at last night's ceremony for her collection
'The Savage Coloniser Book'.
She is also the first Pacific woman to win any major category award in the event.
