New Zealanders will embark on a major bit of avian reconnaissance this weekend, with the annual New Zealand Garden Bird Survey.
The citizen science project asks people take note of what birds visit their gardens, and to report their findings to Manaaki Whenua - Landcare Research.
The organisation uses the data to assess bird population across the country and monitor individual species.
