Samoa election: Political turmoil may end soon

From Morning Report, 8:48 am on 29 June 2021

Samoa's political turmoil may soon be coming to an end.

The nation's Supreme Court has ruled parliament must sit within a week, giving the elected FAST party the ability to declare government and be sworn in.

FAST have a majority of 26 seats, while caretaker the HRPP government has 24.

Caretaker prime minister and HRPP leader Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi faces accusations of contempt of court for blocking the FAST party from being sworn in.

The court is warning any attempt to obstruct the convening of parliament will be punished.
