For the first time in more than 25 years kōkako have been moved to predator-free Kāpiti Island.
This week 11 birds were moved from Pureroa Forest to the island - the first of 35 scheduled to make the shift over the next two years.
The new birds will top-up the existing 100 pairs on Kāpiti and add to the genetic diversity of the kōkako population there.
Kāpiti Island Department of Conservation ranger Lee Barry spoke to Susie Ferguson.
