Union not happy ship carrying infected mariners unable to dock

From Morning Report, 6:39 am on 8 July 2021

Port Taranaki's decision to refuse entry to a ship with two Covid infected crew, is being labelled inhumane.

The Ministry of Health said the Viking Bay was returning to Taranaki Port where all 15 crew would be taken in to managed isolation.

This was rejected by the port which said this would put staff at risk. As of Wednesday night the ministry said it was unclear which port the ship would be docking at.

Maritime Union head, Craig Harrison, says preventing the virus spreading to other crew on the cramped vessel would be hard.

He told Conan Young Taranaki Port should grant them entry on humanitarian grounds.
