Covid-19: Vaccine hesitancy playing a role in Fiji outbreak

From Morning Report, 7:43 am on 12 July 2021

Vaccine hesitancy is playing a role in Fiji's fight against the spread of Covid-19.

The country is being hit hard by an outbreak of the virus, with 8576 active cases in isolation and 55 deaths.

Its latest daily count found 485 new cases and three more people have died from the virus. The Delta variant is sweeping the country, despite the country's vaccination efforts.

On the weekend, the Fiji rugby team was supposed to wear jerseys with the words "Vaccinate Fiji" when it played New Zealand in Dunedin.

The idea was ditched because of opposition from some team members.

The Fiji rugby union says it will discuss players' concerns about wearing the jerseys before the second test against the All Blacks in Hamilton.
