Wellington's largest office building is considerably emptier today as more than 1000 staff stay away.
IRD staff have been told to work from home until the 17-storey Asterton Building on Featherston Street is strengthened.
This comes after the tax department looked into renewing its lease and received a poorer seismic assessment than previously.
The Civil Aviation Authority also operates in the building and has told its staff to stay home for the next two days.
Insurance company, Asteron Life, has also told employees to stay home for the rest of this week until they know more.
RNZ reporter Emma Hatton spoke to Philippa Tolley from outside the building.
Correction: The reporter stated in this cross AA staff are also affected, AA staff do not work in the Asteron Building
