Consultation closing on Māori electoral roll switching

From Morning Report, 8:27 am on 5 August 2021

Consultation closes tomorrow on how often Māori voters should be allowed to switch between the general and Māori electoral rolls.

Many Māori are highly critical of the current rules which allow people to switch rolls only during a four-month window every five or six years.

There are over 200,000 people on the Māori roll, which determines the number of Māori electorates and the number of Māori seats in parliament.

Reporter Te Aorewa Rolleston has the story.
