A heavy snow warning has been in place for Canterbury, Marlborough, Wellington north to Manawatu, Hawke's Bay, Gisborne, Whanganui and Taihape overnight.
A rapidly deepening low moved across central New Zealand, with the heaviest snow expected in north Cantebury and Marlborough above 200 metres, and central and southern parts of the North Island.
Last night, State Highway 7 west of Hanmer Springs was closed, and State Highway 1 south of Kaikōura facing significant delays due to the snow.
This morning, MetService warned showers, with snow to 200 metres will be affecting the Remutaka Hill Road.
