Ross Tomlinson was one of about three people who tried to stop terrorist Ahamed Aathill Mohamed Samsudeen in the New Lynn supermarket.
He was shopping there on Friday afternoon when he heard people had been stabbed.
He told Corin Dann he ran towards the commotion.
