Covid-19: Wānaka locals lash out at Auckland couple

From Morning Report, 7:28 am on 14 September 2021

An Auckland couple's illicit lockdown escape to a holiday home is being described by Wānaka locals as selfish and inexcusable.

The 35-year-old man and his 26 year-old partner crossed Auckland's southern border using essential workers exemptions on Thursday.

They drove to Hamilton before catching a commercial flight to Queenstown via Wellington and renting a car to start their skiing holiday in Wānaka.

But the police were tipped off and the couple were located in Wānaka on Saturday afternoon.

Tess Brunton is in Wānaka and filed this report.
