Covid-19: Truck driver infection picked up in surveillance testing - Henare

From Morning Report, 7:17 am on 17 September 2021

Associate Minister of Health Peeni Henare says a truck driver’s positive Covid-19 test came through as part of surveillance testing.

The driver delivers supermarket supplies and travelled to Cambridge, Hamilton and Tauranga before a positive result was returned.

As of midnight essential workers crossing the Auckland border need to provide proof they have been tested in the last seven days but not the result.

Henare says he understands the driver likely became infectious while outside Auckland.

"The advice that I've been given from the health authorities that it is likely that it was during their trip."

He said possible locations of interest outside of Auckland have not yet been confirmed and are likely to be updated in the 1pm media conference.

He is still under the impression the case does not pose too much risk.

"We still think that this isn't of serious concern. However, it highlights the need for that kind of testing for those who travel across the border."
