Polls have closed in Germany, in a surprising election with the Social Democrats in the lead.
Now the wait is on for the final results, and a new chancellor, as Angela Merkel steps down after 16 years.
It's been a neck-and-neck race. Polling has the Social Democratic Party at 25.5 per cent of the vote - just ahead of the Christian Democrat Party at 24.5 percent.
