Covid-19: National Party wants vaccination targets for Auckland roadmap

From Morning Report, 6:13 am on 5 October 2021

The National Party says the government's plan to ease Covid-19 restrictions in Auckland needs vaccination targets and more specificity.

It's unimpressed with the government's new roadmap to essentially live with the virus, and gradually ease the restrictions in Auckland.

The Prime Minister says elimination was important before we had vaccines - nonetheless, she says testing, tracing, and isolating will remain part of the government's plans.

National Party Covid-19 spokesperson Chris Bishop told Morning Report the plan was took vague.

"There's no timeline, there's no linking of vaccination rates to the loosening of restrictions, there's no certainty for business, you've heard [Hospitality NZ chief executive] Julie White talking.

"There's no future direction signalled beyond at some random point in the future, you'll be able to have a picnic and you'll be able to go out to dinner again at some point."

Bishop said linking vaccination targets to freedom would incentivise people to get their shots.

"We think that there should be explicit linking of vaccination targets to loosening of restrictions. Give people something to go for, say that they 85 percent full vaccination or 85 percent single vaccination, the following things will occur," he said

"The other thing that they should be doing, if it's possible, is giving fully vaccinated people, greater freedoms. There's got to be a reason to get vaccinated, and this is what New South Wales is doing."
