The MMP political system we're all now familiar with turns 25 today.
It wasn't so familliar a quarter-century ago, when the country first went to the polls under the new mixed member proportional style of voting - one tick for your favourite party, the other for your preferred local candidate.
Back then it was a leap into the unknown.
No politician enjoyed more of a bird's eye view of what happened on 12 October 1996 than former Prime Minister Jim Bolger.
