Climate Change Minister on emissions reduction consultation

From Morning Report, 8:26 am on 14 October 2021

The Climate Change Minister admits that progress on slashing the country's atmospheric emissions is slower than he'd like.

The Government has issued a consultation document containing ideas for making New Zealand carbon-neutral by 2050.

The founder of the 1-point-5 Project, Paul Winton, says the bulk of the detail is in transport, while agriculture is all but absent.

James Shaw told Morning Report some things such as cutting methane gas emissions have been excluded from the document, because they're being worked on separately.

"We say in the document itself that the set of policies that have been proposed don't yet get us to the gap.

"That's why we're coming out and talking to the public about it to say beyond this, what else do you think that we ought to be doing?"

The document feeds into the final emissions plan to be released next May.
