Baby kiwis that hatched in Taupo and Rotorua are settling into their new lives on Rotoroa Island, after being granted travel exemptions to cross the South Auckland boundary.
Newborns Will, Nena, Kapow, and Baffle will stay on the predator-free island until they're about 1200 grams.
Then they'll be brought back to Coromandel or Motutapu.
The youngest kiwi, Nena, is just 18 days old and weighs 311 grams, which is about the size of a grapefruit.
Rotoroa Island Trust Ecologist Jo Ritchie spoke to Susie Ferguson.
