Wānaka Yacht Club says collisions on the lake are inevitable in the absence of decent water safety oversight.
This comes as Wānaka's harbourmaster Jeff Donaldson resigned after his concerns about water safety remained unresolved.
Wānaka Yacht Club commodore Graham Berry says there can be up to 1000 boats at a time on the lake in high summer.
The Queenstown Lakes District Council has responded there will be normal water safety oversight this season even without a locally based harbourmaster.
