NATO increases standby forces in eastern Europe

NATO has put increased forces on standby in eastern Europe, as tensions between the Ukraine and Russia escalate.

NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg said a "deteriorating security situation" had led the military alliance to ready frigates, fighter jets and troops for what some analysts believe is an imminent invasion.

With an estimated 100,000 Russian soldiers massed on Ukraine's eastern border, the European Union has also taken steps to try to give some reassurance to Kyiv by announcing a billion-dollar financial package to support the country.
