Generations of some families have worked at the North Canterbury manufacturer Sutton Tools which burnt down on Sunday morning.
General manager Kevin Donovan says staff are gutted, and some have stood in tears at the gate of the destroyed Kaiapoi factory.
He has assured them that they will continue to be paid.
