Lost cat travels from Maine to Florida

From Morning Report, 8:53 am on 11 February 2022

An American family has been reunited with their cat after she was found on the other side of the country, more than six years after she disappeared.

Denise Cilley from the northeastern state of Maine received a shock phone call that her cat Ashes has been found nearly 2500 kilometres away in Florida.

She said told Morning Report when Ashes initially went missing, they searched the neighbourhood but couldn't find her.

They thought it was likely that she had passed away but couldn't be sure.

"I never gave up hope because I never registered her as deceased with the microchip."

The assumption Ashes was dead turned out to be incorrect when she was taken into a Florida vets office.

"This couple kept feeding her and finally she trusted them enough that they could pick her up and when they captured her, they took her to be checked by the vet and to be scanned and lo and behold she was from Maine.

"I think they were just as shocked as I was. I mean they knew she was a stray, so they were hoping she had a microchip, but never did they dream that her home was 1500 miles away."

Ashes has since made her way home and Cilley said she was a great traveller. She took an early flight and then sat quietly in the crate for the two hour drive home.

Once she got home Ashes quickly settled in.

"She went and snuggled up and went to bed with my daughter last night like she'd never ever left."
