Police released a statement on Tuesday morning's scuffle with protesters near Parliament, which includes confirmation a man attempted to drive a car into a group of police officers and has since been arrested.
Police said officers were working to reduce the perimeter of the protest when the incident happened and a large number of protesters attempted to obstruct them.
The statement said some officers were carrying riot shields, in order to protect themselves from objects thrown by protesters, such as human waste.
At least three officers required medical attention after being sprayed with an unknown substance by protesters.
